A Guiding Star to Lead the Way for our Children -A Look into the CKWA University Guidance and Counseling Center

It is 8am in the morning. Tina from the UGC Center has just finished her breakfast. She is now going to the UGC center office located on the second floor of the secondary building. On the other side of the office sits Mr. Vincent Harris. They are going to prepare for the Thursday’s UGC lecture, the second one in this year’s UGC lecture series.

To make sure that parents can sync up with the school, and do not miss any important points on the journey of university application, CKWA has provided parents one on one consultation and monthly workshop on top of lecture series. Though the work is intense, but under the intensity, it is the eager expectation of the parents and the future of the innocent smiley faces. Nobody dares to slack off, and nobody will slack off.

This is not an easy way to go.

From trying different curriculum to find one’s true calling, to choosing the best platform that is in line with one’s values and best suits one’s development, to improving one’s background and scores based on the requirements, to preparing the application documents and the interview……People who have walked this path or are walking on this path all know that this is not “the easy way” to go as people usually assume, but a tricky and thorny journey. Any missing link can lead to a very different result from the expectation.

“What we can do at UGC center is to slice up the university application path, and make reasonable plan for students at different key stage,” said Vincent, “Whoever it is, they may feel lost at the beginning of the application journey. We can pat on their shoulders and tell them that no need to worry because we are here.”

CKWA UGC center will help students to meet the challenges based on their individual requirements of university application. Take language as an example, the bilingual teaching environment has provided the student the best platform for communication and thinking in English in long term. In CKWA’s ASA, we have also provided tutoring on TOEFL, IELTS, SAT prep for students at the high-grade level.

“At the same time, we will provide one on one guidance and counseling on personal statement, thesis and interview. Combining students’ application goal, we will also contact the subject teacher who knows the student the best to provide high quality recommendation letter for children, combining teacher’s subject expertise background and our university counseling experience.” said Vincent.

Besides these basic links, we will also actively make contacts with well-known universities around the world, organize their admission representative to visit our school, and offer as many opportunities as possible for students to directly communicate with the admission officers. Take the first graduate cohort of KAP (Kaiwen Arts Program) as an example, we will welcome admission officers from more than 30 overseas top arts colleges to visit our school. Many of these well-known schools will give direct interviews to our students. In the interviews recently conducted by the London Creative University and by Arts University Bournemouth, the 12 students who attend the interview have got the offer. The passing rate has reached 100%. “The credit belongs to KAP teachers and students. In the meantime, this is also an initial recognition to the UGC work.” Vincent said.

Listening to students: they will eventually walk on the path belonging to them

When it comes to choose a school, Tina said, “choosing a school is not only ticking a few names from the top 100 universities, or simply making choices based on one’s impression, but a process of narrowing down millions of schools to a few choices after careful consideration on one’s interests, values, academic system preference, future planning, and even family situation, etc. With this in mind, we then start to make plans for background improvement, to optimize the study plan, and to make balance between major study and standardized exam preparation.”

“Simply put, school choosing has to be done based on the understanding where the kid is and what the kid strives to be,” Tina said frankly, “we have made a lot of communication with many university application agencies. In the process of application, the professionalism of many agencies is decent, but these agencies may have neglected what I mentioned just now, the initiative of the children. The judgement on the well-known universities is usually based on our recognition spectrum, but the problem is “whether the school is good or bad does not depend on our recognition. We should never judge whether the school suits our kids or not based on our own recognition.”

“What the kid will eventually walk on the path belonging to themselves. The school and the teachers who know your children the best will best help children to think clearly and make clearer decision by taking more initiatives.” At CKWA, although UGC center will provide support to children from various aspects, we always encourage and require kids to make preparation based on their own plan.”

We will ask kids to calm down, spend some time to review and appraise their interests, skills, performance and ambitions, and plan accordingly based on the requirements and plan with the support and suggestion provided by UGC. In this process, kids will get the chance to understand themselves, evaluate themselves, make choice on their future direction, and learn to manage time for their choice, learn how to fight and strive for what they want. This is a time-consuming and effort-consuming process. But for many students, this is also a unique inspiring experience.

Please rest assured, because we are here

“We understand kids. Therefore, we can not only comb goals and make individual plans for kids, but also go deep into the classrooms of kids, appraise the state of kids and give direct support in class based on staged requirements,” Tina told us, “on the door of UGC Center hung the schedule of me and Vincent. Students and parents who have needs can book one on one consultation time with us. From academic performance to university application, from paper details to life development, they can talk everything with us.”

The interview is about to finish. A G11 boy comes to the office and starts to talk with Tina and enquire the plan about competition and summer school. From their conversation, I get the information that his aims to study business in New York University. I am shocked at the earnest look and the detailed preparation of this student. Suddenly, the words of Vincent occurred to me, “Whoever it is, they may feel lost at the beginning of the application journey. We can pat on their shoulders and tell them that no need to worry because we are here.”
