Dr. Bob Stephenson
Chairman of Council, Beijing Chaoyang KaiWen Academy
Director of KaiWen Education Academic Board
Dr. Bob Stephenson, formerly a lower master at Eton College, joined Kaiwen Education Group in August 2017. Dr. Stephenson is a highly respectable educator with excellent leadership skills and a vast experience in school management. We are very excited to welcome Dr. Stephenson onto the CKWA management team, and we are sure he will bring new motivational energy with a dedicated approach.
Dr. Stephenson got his B.Sc. in Biology 1st Class Honors and Ph.D. from University of Sussex, Falmer, Brighton. He first joined Eton in 1983, and throughout the following 34 years, he has acted as Head of Biology, Head of Science, House Master, Senior Tutor and Lower Master. He has gained the love, respect and appreciation from all the students, colleagues and parents for his dedicated work and professional approach through his Eton career.
Throughout his career he has upheld the principles of “individualized education” and fairness towards each individual student, guiding them constructively and paying full attention to their mental well-being which led to him setting up a psychological support center at Eton, one of Dr. Stephenson’s great career achievements. He created Eton schools policy from scratch, bringing a unified approach to the school structure, as well as devising a unique cognitive admissions test complimented with a new admission system also introduced by Dr. Stephenson.
The president of Eton, Simon Henderson was quoted in the farewell letter that Dr. Stephenson was “a truly outstanding Lower Master”, and former Eton president Eric Anderson was quoted: “For a headmaster, he was a real asset, innovative within his department and well-liked by the pupils who were inspired by his dedication to the subject and the desire to improve them in the field."
Looking back at his 34 years at Eton, Dr. Stephenson was quoted saying:” Why would I want to spend the rest of my career acting as a cushion?” An energizing approach by a man with such a thriving experience in education, as we should be able to discuss the things we do not understand, rather than simply go through the motions.
Kaiwen Education welcomes Dr. Stephenson with 34 years of experience, more so his love and dedication for his students and their academic improvement. “As I move from Eton to a new and exciting field in China, my philosophy will remain the same: If we back the youth, we simply cannot fail."
Please welcome Dr. Bob Stephenson.

Elite School Background and Nearly 30 Years of Education
Martin was educated at Durham School, a top British school with a history of over 600 years. After receiving A levels in French, History and Latin, Martin took up a place at Manchester University where he read Politics and Modern History. During this time he was sponsored by the British Army and upon graduation he went to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to complete officer training. He spent ten years as an infantry officer, serving in the UK, Berlin, Northern Ireland, the Falkland Islands, Africa, Central America, and the Far East. These experiences helped Martin shape his tenacious spirit, collaborative awareness, and self-discipline.
In 1994, he left the Army to take a teaching post at Newcastle-under-Lyme School, an independent day school in central England, where he held important positions first as Head of Year and later Director of Studies, taking responsibility for all curriculum and academic matters. In 2000 Martin completed his MBA in Education Administration at Keele University, further developing his understanding of and enthusiasm for educational leadership. In 2004, he was appointed Deputy Head of The King’s School Tynemouth, an independent day school, situated in North East England. In 2009, Martin was appointed to be Headmaster of his old school, the prestigious Durham School. During his nearly 6 years of headship at Durham, the school experienced a significant growth in pupil numbers and impressive academic progress. Martin also oversaw an expansion of boarding and made outstanding contributions to the boarding system. In addition, he initiated Durham School’s international development planning by recruiting pupils, establishing an annual exchange programme with schools in Chengdu and Shanghai, and setting a long-term goal of opening Durham Schools overseas. In 2014, Martin moved to Malaysia to take up the Founding Headship of Epsom College, a branch of Epsom College UK. During this time, he was committed to exploring the best education model by integrating the very best of British boarding education and the advanced education in Asia. This was indisputably a success as the college was booming and the A Level results outperformed those of Epsom College UK.
Highly Consistent IB Concept
Underpinning his educational philosophy is a firm belief that education, in the broadest sense, encompasses far more than what goes on in the classroom. The sporting, artistic, musical, outdoor, social, environmental and relationship experiences which are offered to children are as important as maths, science, and language. This is also highly consistent with the educational philosophy that IB advocates. What needs to be clear is that in the rapidly changing world we now inhabit, these experiences are more important than ever.
Family and Personal Life
Martin is married to Vivienne, also a teacher, and has two children, Max aged 22 and Claudia aged 20. As a keen sportsman, he enjoys in particular rugby, squash, and skiing. He now concentrates on running and enjoys taking part in long distance challenges. Also as a keen outdoor adventurer, he especially favours walking and camping in remote places. Martin loves children and devotes himself to education with great passion. He has excellent management and decision-making skills, and can collaborate and communicate effectively in different cultural fields. In addition, he understands Asia well and is very experienced in international education. During his study visit in Beijing Chaoyang Kaiwen Academy in May 2018, he has experienced the hospitality of staff and the cultural atmosphere of the school. As he moves to take up the headship of Beijing Chaoyang Kaiwen Academy, Martin is delighted once again to be moving to work in Asia and looks forward to working with pupils, staff, and parents there.
