As Hamlet turns the wheel of fortune, Harry Li, a 12th-grader player from CKWA, is standing in the middle of the open-air stage of Shakespeare Theatre in London.
He spoke the famous lines with splendid skill and sincere feeling , showing the complexity of ordinary people’s choices in front of fate.
Hundreds of people from all over Europe stood up and gave him thunderous applause.
Harry, who got into CKWA only three years ago, could never have imagined that he would be performing in Shakespeare’s hometown one day.
Harry’s favorite line from Shakespeare is from King Lear: Nothing will come of Nothing.
But now, with his perseverance and persistence, he has obtained offers of business administration in universities such as Queen Mary University of London, Leeds University and Birmingham University , which has brought him closer to Britain, the country he dreams to study in.
From public school to private school
Harry is the founding student of CKWA and will be one of the first academic graduates.
Like other children transferred from public schools, he always struggled with English when he first arrived.
“My former school was a key school,” Harry said, sounding a little proud. “But when I came to CKWA, the curriculum was completely different.
The courses was almost taught in English, and I had a hard time keeping up. But I am very grateful to my teachers, to every teacher.
Harry realized that when he first came to Kevin, every time he got into trouble i English or other aspect, the teacher would explain to him sentence by sentence, and the homework would be taught one problem after another.
“A lot of parents think there isn’t graduated students in Kevin School yet and they are afraid to send their kids to school. But it seems to be different for me.Our founding students was involved in the development of the school and the creation of the culture, and due to the small number of students, we basically had one-on-one class every day. The class was very efficient, so every question can be well answered, “Harry explained, as an graduate.
With the help of his teachers, Harry, who had been transferred from the public school , built up an English foundation quickly.
Find himself in the drama
For three years Harry had appeared in all plays, both big and small, before getting the role of Hamlet.
From playing a donkey in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” to playing the Lord of the Rings, encouraging soldiers to win the war, from playing a small role for the first time to volunteer to go to the behind-the-scenes lighting division the following year, it took Harry three years to walk onto the stage at Shakespeare’s Globe.
“I don’t have a foundation in acting, so I’ll give myself a five out of ten. I think there’s room for improvement,” Harry says coyly, referring to theatrical performances.
In Harry’s words, “I’m actually a very quiet person, but studying drama helped me find inner strength.”
As one of the three unique courses of CKWA, drama is the main part of the art course and has unique advantages in CKWA.
It is equipped with an independent black box theater with a capacity of 220 people and a professional grand theater with a capacity of 800 people. Relying on traditional Chinese culture and art all over the world, it introduces global high-quality art resources, all of which support the development of unique art courses of CKWA.
Students also use drama to learn academic knowledge, appreciate music, and develop various skills such as communication, presentation, and teamwork.
Of all his performances, the most impressive role was Hamlet.
at the beginning of this year, he traveled to England with drama teacher and performed at Shakespeare’s Globe.
It left him less than five days to prepare.
Every day , Harry took the first train to the theater before sun rises. Every day , he took the last train back to his hotel after sun gets down.
“It was a fight,” Harry recalled, “i do not want to embarrass Kevin.”
“When he studied drama in Kevin school, it wasn’t just about learning to express it in English,” Harry says earnestly. “In Midsummer Night’s Dream, I used my own body language to interpret a donkey, just by showing the exaggerated banter and grotesque stupidity of the characters, the funnier the better. But Hamlet is different. i need to dig in myself. The teacher taught us to be the person in the story through the play.put myself in his place and feel his joy and pain. It’s not often, but it’s necessary. It’s called empathy.I think a lot at that moment. I am in a state of withdrawal.”
Harry sees others in the play, feels the big and small changes in himself and his surroundings, perceiving the pain and love, perceiving many subtle emotions and forces, which also enables him to find himself in the process. This is also the charm of play.
“The deputy head from Oxford and the professor wrote the letter of recommendation for me.”
“At first I wanted to study media. However, after careful consideration and several conversations with teachers, I want to choose business. One reason is that I’m introvert, and the other is that I really want to do something to make people’s lives better, “Harry recalled, referring to his choice.
The school has helped me a lot. From university counseling to document preparation, application guidance and recommendation letters, I have been helped at almost every step that I could think of. Harry talked about background enhancement, including attending the ASDAN Contest for the first time.
In order to help him improve his business background, Angela Li led Harry to participate in ASDAN business Contest for the first time.
In the face of real business competition , Harry, under the guidance of his teacher, proceeded in an orderly way by calculating costs, benefits and participating in the auction. However, due to his lack of experience, he and his team fell far behind others in the bidding process.
“An auction is to bid for the materials your company needs. Some schools have a very clear purpose, such as use all the money to bid materials, forming a monopoly, and then sell it at a high price. because we had no experience, we didn’t get anything. Then we have to buy material with money from one school to another achool, and after we collecting some materials, another school cheated us “Harry laughs.” But we still won the best Roadshow award at the public presentation because of our good English and speaking skills developed in drama.
This contest enlightened me a lot in business and really opened my eyes to learn business management.
In this way, With the help of his teacher, Harry started his application for business administration.
At the time of the application, Harry’s letters of recommendation came from two of most important teachers in Kevin school.
They are Mr. Andrew Leale, the vice-Chancellor who graduated from The University of Oxford, and Mr. Edward Gasanoff, an associate professor who once taught at a well-known University in the United States.
“I think I’m very qualified to write letters of recommendation, because I studied politics, philosophy and economics at Oxford,” said President Andrew, referring to Harry’s university application.
“When I wrote a letter of recommendation for Harry, one thing I had to emphasize was his involvement in a variety of activities.Kevin’s holistic education is invaluable in supporting children who want to go to the best universities around the world. On the one hand, Harry is very keen on acting in the theater. We can see his enthusiasm for doing this work.On the other hand, he took an active part in drama performances, proving that teamwork was also crucial to him. This indicates a willingness to engage oneself in a wide range of activities. At the same time, the admission officer also saw his love for English and his strong understanding and communication skills in both spoken and written English.
Harry wrote several drafts of his personal statement. We also gave feedback on each draft. And I gave him very specific advice based on my experience over the last 30 years. We ended up applying to five universities and fortunately we’ve received offers from three so far.”
At the end of the interview, when asked about Harry’s growth and changes over the years, Harry laughed and said,
“I think I grew up.with time going on , growing up is doomed. But only in Kevin school, could I grow up in this way.
